The Amazing Grace hymn is Olney’s story – and it is our Buckinghamshire town which will lead the worldwide commemorations for the 250th anniversary of its composition.

Starting on January 1st 2020, we are proud to announce the launch of an online calendar in readiness to mark the anniversary (seen here). It will feature community, art and educational events being organised to celebrate this major cultural year: not just for Olney but from anywhere in the world.

Spearheaded by Cowper and Newton museum, this iniative will encourage people to share in this anniversary. Anyone, anywhere in the world will be able to add events and we will be able to track where they are once the calendar fills out.

This is only the start: now it is over to the community in Olney – and those attached to the hymn to let us know what they are doing. We hope you will join in. More updates will follow and we will be adding to more and more to read about the Olney’s Amazing Grace story as we mark the event.

In Olney, the Amazing Grace Community Quilt Project, run by The Cowper Memorial United Reformed Church will be making a large display quilt commemorating the words of the hymn which will then tour venues in Olney & beyond. A Community Orchard will be established by the Olney Allotment Association; Sharing Heritage Project – Cowper & Newton Museum. Telling the history & story of the people and places in Olney through new information boards in the town and new heritage trails.

Wondering how can you join in?  Please use the  email if you would like to plan an event or want to know how you can be involved in one. We are hoping too that you will spread the word, through social media, through organisations and telling family and friends.
